About

In the quiet spaces between headlines and statistics, a crisis has been unfolding—one that weighs heavily on an entire generation and has costed our economy over $282 billion. Mental illness is now the leading cause of disability worldwide for young people. This is a generation navigating a world that feels out of control, hyper-connected yet profoundly isolating, and often harshly indifferent to their struggles. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that suicide rates among youth have surged 60% over the past decade, making suicide the second leading cause of death for those aged 10-24. Nearly one in five young people reports experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety severe enough to disrupt their daily lives. The American Psychological Association reveals that 91% of Gen Z youth report physical or emotional symptoms of stress, yet over 60% receive no treatment. What’s more, 40% of college students reported in a recent study that they were too depressed to function. Crisis Generation seeks to go beyond simplistic narratives, moving past labels like “social media-obsessed” and “snowflake generation,” to illuminate the deeply human stories behind these startling statistics.

Much of the existing discourse around this crisis has been led by Gen X researchers and professionals who, while knowledgeable, often lack the lived experience that makes these issues palpable. As a documentary produced and directed by a member of Gen Z, this film will envision an authentic, insider’s perspective on how it feels to grow up under the weight of these pressures. Aly, author of Out of Focus: Why Gen Z’s Mental Health Crisis is More Complex Than You Think, will help the film capture the intersectional realities facing today’s youth—realities that are often overlooked in academic studies and media portrayals.
